It is used for the standardized presentation and documentation of geographical, administrative and historical information about places worldwide with a focus on Europe and the German-speaking world in particular. Each place is represented by a unique identifier and is linked to relevant metadata such as alternative names, hierarchical levels, historical classifications and geographical coordinates. The GOV supports genealogical research, historical analysis and the assignment of location data through its hierarchical structure and interfaces that facilitate comparison with other data sources. The database is continuously expanded and updated and is freely available, with an active community supporting data maintenance. The GOV provides persistent identifiers to ensure sustainable referencing and can be used for data curation, identification, matching and normalized data processing. |
