As a self-governing organisation, the DFG sees itself as a mirror of science and the scientific communities. The DFG distinguishes between the four scientific disciplines: Humanities and Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Natural Sciences and Engineering Sciences. The DFG system divides these into subject areas, which in turn are differentiated into review boards. The review boards cover a total of around 200 subjects as well as their sub-disciplines and sub-areas.
