The LC Subject Headings are used primarily for subject indexing of printed material and works. They are used for the organisation of libraries. The LCSH brings together the entire inventory of subject terms and keywords, which consists of different sub-vocabularies with specific subject areas. Systems in other languages that are comparable to the LCSH are the German Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD) and the French Répertoire d'autorité-matière encyclopédique et alphabétique unifié (RAMEAU). The LCSH is published in printed and web-based PDF form. In March 2022, the keyword standard file comprised almost 400,000 terms.
