Basic information

Properties
(P34)?Naming:Thesaurus of Old English
(P1266)?Abbreviation:TOE
(P724)?Digest:The ‘Thesaurus of Old English’ is an Old English (Anglo-Saxon) dictionary. The entries are based on J. R. Clark Hall's ‘A concise Anglo-Saxon dictionary’ (4th ed., Cambridge, 1960). The following search options are available: Word search with Old English terms or with their New English equivalents, browsing (alphabetical and systematic) with New English terms or with restricted usage (unique, in glossed texts, in poetry) and search with Old English phrases. Vowels can be searched for with or without a length mark. In the primary results list, the search or index term is linked to the corresponding word field. Some words and phrases are accompanied by comments, for example on references or philological questions. TOE online is based on the ‘A Thesaurus of Old English’ of the same name, which was published in 1995 by the Centre for Late Antique and Medieval Studies at Kings College in London (reprint Amsterdam 2000). The database has been maintained by the University of Glasgow since 2005 and will be updated regularly.
