(P724)?Digest:	The Historical Thesaurus of the English contains almost every recorded word in the English language from Old English to the present day, based on the information in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and supplemented in particular by ‘A Thesaurus of Old English’ (TOE, second edition 2000), which contains words from the period c.700-1150 AD not included in the OED. References to the dictionary are given. The Historical Thesaurus draws directly on the meanings and dating of words in the OED, with some additional information where necessary. If a word in the OED has more than one meaning, it appears in more than one thesaurus category. For each individual thesaurus entry, synonyms are listed in chronological order according to the first recorded date of use of the respective word in English, with the earliest synonyms listed first. The date of the last recording of the word is also given where applicable. The thesaurus therefore lists both obsolete words and obsolete meanings of current words, while also providing a comprehensive treatment of current English. In addition to the date of recording of the use, each word is supplemented, where appropriate, by restrictive designations of register, style, frequency or geography from the OED, such as poetic, anthropological or American. The words are offered in a hierarchical classification system of up to eight hierarchies and are provided with very good descriptions and explanations.
