Basic information

Properties
(P34)?Naming:Historical International Standard Classification of Occupations
(P1266)?Abbreviation:
(P724)?Digest:Based on the ISCO version of 1968, Dutch historians and sociologists created a classification system for job titles in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The HISCO system was published web-based with a broad lexicon, numerous language variants and data sets. The service has not been available since 2024. A privately published linked open data version is available as a replacement, but this no longer provides any documentation. These are available via the book publications. The HISCO system was based on the coding of the 1,000 most common male and female job titles in datasets from eight countries: Belgium, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden. The occupational data covers the period from 1690 to 1970, but mostly dates from the 19th century. They contain titles given by or registered for people of all ages in church records and civil registers. The sample selection was aimed at a broad mix of agricultural, industrial and commercial occupations, of old and new technologies, of traditional and modern forms of organisation. Nevertheless, the programme is limited to the Northern European and Atlantic economies. The ‘History of Work Information System’ had different SPSS syntaxes for additional analyses of social classes (HISCLASS) and industries.
