Basic information

Properties
(P34)?Naming:Historical International Social Class Scheme
(P1266)?Abbreviation:
(P724)?Digest:Hisclass transforms the classification of activities and qualification levels of occupations of the ‘Historical International Standard of Classification of Occupations’ into a scheme of social classes at the coding level in order to make processes of social mobility measurable. In contrast to other historical schemes, HISCLASS is based on an international methodology and was created for the purpose of enabling comparisons between different eras, countries and languages. The special value lies in the link between HISCO and HISCLASS. Detailed printed documentation describes how the historical occupational titles classified in HISCO can serve as building blocks for a social class scheme of past populations. The dimensions underlying the classes are discussed. For example, how can manual labour be distinguished from non-manual labour? Skilled from unskilled labourers? And what did ‘supervision’ really mean? An extensive source of detailed occupational information is used to measure these dimensions. The result is a tool that can be used to systematically compare social positions identified from the variety of job titles across regions and time periods.
