(P724)?Digest:The website of the National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC) of the United Kingdom provides a detailed history of the classification and the changes that were made with the introduction of the new Standard Occupational Classification 2000 (SOC2000). Since 2001, the NS-SEC can be used in all official statistics and surveys. It has also been coordinated with the European Socio-Economic Classification (ESeC). The model is based on the Goldthorpe scheme and is considered a good predictor of health and education. The NS-SEC was developed to measure employment relationships and conditions (see Goldthorpe 2007). Conceptually, these are of central importance for showing the structure of socio-economic positions in modern societies and for explaining differences in social behaviour and other social phenomena. The NS-SEC has been validated in even more detail and is particularly well suited for European comparisons. Since the classification measures employment relationships, i.e. aspects of the work and market situation as well as the employment contract, it makes it easier to map causal relationships and incorporate a range of additional variables.
