| (P724)?Digest: | Since 2003, the ‘German ISIL Agency and Registration Office’ of the Berlin State Library has been issuing the ‘International Standard Identifier for Libraries and Related Organisations (ISO 15511)’ upon request. ISIL is the international identifier for libraries, archives, museums and other cultural heritage institutions. Comprehensive information about the individual institutions is recorded and contact details, institutional affiliations, collection areas, self-descriptions, etc. are provided. In some cases, ISIL identifiers are also assigned to electronic resources or specialised information systems (FID). The global ISIL identification system integrates the identification systems already in place in individual countries or at institutions operating internationally. Internationally, ISIL is managed by the ISIL Registration Authority in Copenhagen. The German ISIL is also considered a MARC organisation code for the database maintained by the Library of Congress in the United States, as well as for the WorldCat Registry and the OCLC WorldCat. The ISIL consists of a country code, a serial number and a prefix for specific types of institutions. |
