| (P724)?Digest: | In 1975, Fritz Molle published his encyclopaedia of contemporary job titles in collaboration with the ‘Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT)’, the Federal Statistical Office, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and the Federal Employment Agency. The aim was to provide a contemporary definition and systematic organisation of occupations, rather than to explore etymological ideas. It was intended to serve as a guide for the development of new occupational classifications and categorisations. The work was based on the first edition of 1951 and the ‘Handbuch der Berufe’ (Handbook of Occupations) from 1923 to 1936, which Molle had also published. While the 1951 edition comprised 2,600 terms, by 1975 the work had grown to 12,000 keywords, which were also compiled by researching sources relating to occupations and professional associations. In this respect, Molle was only slightly behind the occupational name collections of the Federal Employment Office (1970 approx. 17,000 entries). The work is an excellent source for the assignment and decoding of historical occupational information with many cross-references and mentions of similar or identical occupations. |
