Basic information

(P34)?Naming:European Socioeconomic Groups (ESeG)
(P1266)?Abbreviation:
(P724)?Digest:The European Socioeconomic Groups (ESeG) is a scale for measuring socioeconomic status with the possibility of international comparisons within the EU. It further develops the European Socio-economic Classification (ESeC). In 2014, Eurostat set up a working group that documented the newly developed ESeG classification in the final report by Monique Meron et al. 2014. It is mainly based on ISCO-08 and a person's employment status and is therefore relatively easy to implement in various surveys. The ESeG is now available in various versions (2014, 2016, as well as adaptations for various surveys, e.g. the Allbus 1980-2016 or the Adult Education Survey Microdata (2018)). In the second revision in 2016, the classification of economically inactive persons was made in particular. Programme codes and scripts for SPSS and Stata are available for the adaptations made by GESIS, which enable simple integration.
